What is PIS/PASEP?

PIS (Social Integration Program) and PASEP (Public Servant Asset Formation Program) are social contributions of a tax nature, intended to finance unemployment insurance, benefits and participation in the revenue of agencies and entities for both private and public sector workers, respectively.

PIS, created by Complementary Law No. 7/1970, is intended for employees in the private sector and is administered by Caixa Econômica Federal.

Meanwhile, PASEP, established by Complementary Law No. 8/1970, is aimed at public servants and is administered by Banco do Brasil.

What is the difference between PIS and PASEP?

PIS and PASEP are programs maintained by the Brazilian government designed to contribute to the country's socioeconomic development. PIS was created in 1970, while PASEP was created in 1971. 

In this sense, the PIS is aimed at beneficiaries of the General Social Security Regime and is intended to provide emergency financial assistance to Brazilian workers, while the PASEP It is intended for those who are public servants. 

In general, both programs offer a Benefit of up to R$1,302, depending on the days worked.

What are the benefits of PIS/PASEP?

The Social Integration Program (PIS) and the Public Servant Asset Formation Program (PASEP) offer several advantages to registered workers.

One of the main benefits of PIS/PASEP is the Salary Bonus, created to promote improvements in the quality of life of Brazilians.

The PIS/PASEP salary bonus, in turn, is a benefit worth an annual minimum wage, guaranteed to workers in private companies (PIS) and public servants (PASEP).

What is the value of PIS/PASEP?

The amount of the PIS/PASEP salary bonus is determined based on the number of months worked in the base year in question. This payment is proportional to the formal worker's length of service in the respective year, considering the maximum limit of one national minimum wage in effect on the date of payment.

Calculation criteria

The calculation of the salary bonus amount is done as follows:

  • Proportionality: The amount is proportional to the number of months worked during the base year. To be entitled to the full salary bonus, equivalent to a minimum wage, the worker must have carried out paid activity for all 12 months of the base year.
  • Month of Service: A month of service is considered to be 15 days worked within the same month.
  • Fractionation: The benefit amount is divided into 12 parts, corresponding to the months of the year, with only the fraction corresponding to the months worked being paid.

Calculation Example

If a worker worked for 6 months in the base year, he/she will receive half of the current minimum wage as a bonus. If the minimum wage is, for example, R$ 1,100.00, the worker will receive R$ 550.00 as a bonus.

PIS/PASEP Payment Calendar

The PIS/PASEP payment schedule is established annually by the responsible bodies, Caixa Econômica Federal (for PIS) and Banco do Brasil (for PASEP), and follows specific criteria to determine the salary bonus payment dates.

This calendar is defined taking into account, mainly, the worker's month of birth (in the case of PIS) or the registration number (in the case of PASEP).

Payment schedule structure:

  • PIS (Federal Savings Bank): PIS payments are made according to the worker's birth month. Payments generally begin in the second half of each year and continue until the first quarter of the following year. Workers born in the first months of the calendar tend to receive the salary bonus first.
  • PASEP (Bank of Brazil): PASEP payment follows the final number of the civil servant's registration. Like PIS, payment generally begins in the second half of the year and continues until the first quarter of the following year.

How do I check the calendar?

The official payment calendar is published every year by the responsible bodies and can be consulted:

  • PIS: On the Caixa Econômica Federal website or apps, as well as at self-service terminals and Caixa branches.
  • PASEP: On the Banco do Brasil website or branches, where you can check specific payment dates according to your registration number.
